Chanel “Paris-Bombay” Bombay Express 2012 Makeup

chanel bombay express makeupBack in December I showed you the beauty for Chanel Métiers D’Art Paris-Bombay Pre-Fall 2012 collection and now we have official images of the pieces in the Chanel Bombay Express makeup collection.  The collection features a lovely Poudre Compacte called Route des Indes de Chanel which is a lovely golden color used to highlight and matches many skintones. As with all of Chanel’s special palettes, the Route des Indes de Chanel compact features an Indian-inspired design.

The Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Brume d’Or is a lovely pinkish-peach with a hint of gold and the new Rouge Coco Shine
in Empreinte is a nice nude color to balance out the dramatic and bold eyemakeup.  Finally there’s Le Vernis in Diwali, a luminous gold shade named for the Indian festival of lights.

I love the items in the collection – I’m a huge fan of dramatic eye makeup with a nude lip and I think these colors will look especially pretty with a tanned summer glow.  The collection is set to release this month.

Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2012 Paris-Bombay Accessories

Chanel Paris-Bombay Accessories

I’ve said it before, I’ve said it again – I’m an accessories girl. I like apparel, but I LOVE accessories. To me, apparel is just something you wear under accessories. The Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2012 Paris-Bombay Accessories were so intricate that they could have had a show unto themselves – oppulent would be an understatement. But for all of their embellishment, Karl Lagerfeld managed to make it look all in good taste.

All of the models wore tikka – jewelry hanging on to the forehead that you attach to your hair – the Chanel version differed on some models by the addition of many chains that hung and draped over the side of the face. Bracelets took on a life of their own with some covering the hand and some with finger attachments. Necklaces ran the gamut from chokers to full bib necklaces to running across the body, across the shoulder and even full body jewelry that looked like a mesh overlay worn over clothing. Fingerless gloves and boots have patterns on them that were reminiscent of mehendi henna patterns normally seen on the hands and feet of brides.

New iterations of the Boy bag had all or one of the following: quilting on the front flap, exotic skins, Double-C clasp, and jewel encrusted thick straps. Some bags were in exotic skins while others looked like they were made of metal, some were in metallic leather while others were heavily jewel encrusted. Chanel showed these little pyramid-esque evening purses that looked like they were made to house treasure. My favorite bag was a snake skin clutch with diamond encrusted clasp. Sandals mimicked the bracelets and looked like foot jewelry while some boots looked like they were extensions of the pants. Gold booties looked inspired by men’s footwear but were every bit feminine. I can’t wait for this collection to be in stores so I can see all of the details in person!

The Original Chanel Paris-Bombay: Vintage Chanel Bombay-Inspired Designs

Silk Lamé tunic and trouser ensemble; Bib Necklace, Gabrielle Chanel, Spring/Summer 1969. Image from Chanel: Couture and Industry by Amy de la Haye

“In the late Fifties, early Sixties, she designed several Indian-inspired outfits — and that was enough.”
-Karl Lagerfeld, WWD

Karl Lagerfeld’s creativity knows no bounds, but what I love about him as the designer for Chanel is that he utterly respects the foundations that Gabrielle Chanel laid. With each Chanel Métiers D’Art collection he takes us on a trip around the globe to view a visual fusion of Paris and some glamorous destination. But these destinations are not pulled out of his magician’s hat (or fingerless gloves), rather, they are based on clues that Gabrielle Chanel left us long ago.

Having access to the Chanel archives, Karl Lagerfeld knew that Chanel herself was inspired by South Asia and designed clothing and jewelry in the sixties that were Indian-inspired.  Reviewing some of my Chanel books, I was able to cull some examples for you to see.  It’s interesting to see how glitzy previous examples are and how subdued the current Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2012 Paris-Bombay collection is.  It’s also interesting to note that this is not the first time that Karl Lagerfeld has referenced this South Asian inspiration.  The bottom two photos show images of Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel from previous collections .

Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2012 Paris-Bombay Decor

Chanel Metiers dArt Paris Bombay Grand Palais decor

While I’m waiting on getting the images of the collection laid out I thought I’d share some photos Chanel sent me of the decor of the Chanel Métiers aD’Art Pre-Fall 2012 Paris-Bombay show.  The Grand Palais was transformed into a Maharaja’s palace complete with long tables set for high tea.  Tables brimmed with fruit, floral arrangements and crystal candelabras.  The scene would not be complete without a silver toy train emblazoned with the signature double-C’s.  Let the beautiful setting sink in and I’ll post pics of the collection soon!  Oh, what I would have done to be seated at one of those tables… or even be a fly on a piece of fruit!

Saoirse Ronan Wears Chanel to Hanna NYC Premiere

saoirse ronan in chanel hanna nyc premiere
Saoirse Ronan, the star of Hanna, wore a dress from the Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2011 Paris-Byzance collection to the NYC premiere of her film. I think she wore it well. She seems really young though and I think the dress may be a bit old for her. It’s beautiful, don’t get me wrong, I just would have loved to see her in something else. What do you think?

Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2011 Paris-Byzance Beauty

The theme of the collection, Paris-Byzance is a great inspiration on it’s own. The links and associations with Chanel are rich and plenty.  Karl gave Sam (McKnight) and me a sketch giving us a rough idea of the direction he wanted for the look, from then the tone was set.  Karl also showed us the world-famous mosaic portrait of Theodora, the Empress of the Byzantine Empire Mosaic from the Saint-Vital de Ravenne Basilica, which very naturally became the inspiration for the show’s makeup. The portrait gave me a focus point : the red eye shadow/liner that she wears on the arch of her eyebrows. This look is all about light and rich textures. The choreography between gold, bronze, black and red can be easily personalized according to the desires of each woman.

- Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup

Chanel Paris-Byzance Look Book Shot in Ravenna, Italy

“It’s all about mosaics,” said Lagerfeld, who traveled to Ravenna, Italy, to view the intricate artworks from the fifth and sixth centuries that adorn its churches and monuments. “I thought it was an influence that could be very much Chanel,” he said. “It’s also about a spirit.”

-WWD

In the 6th Century, Ravenna was the “westernmost pillar of the Byzantine Empire.” (Rick Steves, Ravenna: Italy’s Byzantium).  Today, Ravenna is a living shrine featuring the monuments and churches of the lost empire.  Boasting a rich cultural history, Ravenna is “best look at the glories of Byzantium this side of Istanbul.”  (Rick Steves, Ravenna: Italy’s Byzantium).

Since the Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2011 Paris-Byzance show was inspired by the Byzantine Empire, Karl Lagerfeld went to Ravenna, Italy to shoot the Look Book for the collection.  I wonder how much of the ancient mosaics will be in the photos.  I think it’s great that Uncle Karl went to Ravenna because the photos will be have historical integrity – something that a set could never replicate.  I can’t wait to see the pictures of the look book. In the mean time, check out these gorgeous photos of mosaics from Ravenna, Italy.
