For those of us who won’t be in Guangzhou, China to see the new Culture Chanel exhibit, Chanel has created an interactive website devoted to Culture Chanel. By visiting the site you can watch videos about each of the themes explored in the exhibit: Le Train Bleu, Breathe, Move, Love, Dream and Invent. You will also find images of photographs, paintings and illustrations that are featured in the exhibit. By adding an image to “My Culture Chanel” you can make your own exhibit. New Culture Chanel Exhibit In Guangzhou, China

culture chanel exhibit

In 2011 Chanel opened a Culture Chanel exhibit in China at Shanghai’s MOCA. The exhibit took a biographical approach and looked at events in Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s life and how they influenced her life’s works. On Wednesday, Chanel is opening the second installment of the Culture Chanel exhibit at the Guangzhou Opera House.

The Guangzhou Opera House was designed by Zaha Hadid, who if you remember, also designed the Chanel Mobile Art Pavillion. The decision of venue is an indication of the direction of the exhibit which Chanel explains as an exploration of “the behaviours and attitudes that set this style in motion and that the Chanel designers apply today, giving Chanel a timeless contemporary quality.”

Culture Chanel Exhibit

Coco Chanel’s fearlessness and independence “allowed women to breathe, move, love, dream, and invent their life as a woman.” As such, the exhibit is split up into these categories to delve into the world of Coco Chanel’s creative process, and her relationships with avant garde artists of the time including Jean Cocteau, Amadeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Raymond Radiguet, and Pierre Reverdy.

Culture Chanel Exhibit

Art Director Jean-Louis Froment, curator of the Culture Chanel exhibit stated: “It is a unique history that intertwines and may merge with history as a whole. It is the creation of a language that goes from Gabrielle Chanel’s timeline to the line of creations that the brand has to offer today.”

Culture Chanel Exhibit

Today Chanel released a video of the behind-the-scenes preview of the Culture Chanel exhibit. In the video, we see the hanging of “Le Train Bleu” by Pablo Picasso. “Le Train Bleu” was a ballet by the Ballets Russes where Pablo Picasso painted the backdrop and Coco Chanel designed the costumes. This was but one example of Coco Chanel’s collaboration with the leading thinkers and artists of her time.

Karl Lagerfeld sketched a “no smoking” sign but it’s not your typical sign. However, he was not making a statement about unhealthy habits, instead he was noting all the YSL references on many runways and he was stating that you would find a “smoking” – the french term for tuxedo – on his runway. Lagerfeld stated: “We don’t have to do smoking. Hedi Slimane really does it well.” WWD

On July 24th, Chanel is opening a pop-up shop in the heart of Covent Garden just in time for the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The shop will be home to many exciting activities, events and products as it stays open through December 2012. On opening day, you’ll see mimes wearing Chanel jewelry pointing the way to the Chanel boutique which will have the limited edition makeup collection Bleu Illusion.

Chanel is rumored to have teamed up for a fragrance collaboration with a local flower stall. Vouge UK reported:

In addition to exclusive new products, which will launch at the boutique over the next seven months, planned highlights will include a Chanel treasure hunt; educational workshops; consultations with leading Chanel make-up experts; a luxurious space dedicated to facials and pampering; an outdoor area that will recreate the look and atmosphere of being backstage at one of the label’s catwalk shows; and a very special festive surprise come Christmas.

Chanel will also be announcing more events throughout the coming months so stay tuned for more exciting news! I can’t wait to see more. I’ll keep you posted.

First Look: Chanel Bleu Illusion Makeup Collection

chanel bleu illusion

Back in January we got a sneak peak of Chanel’s Bleu Illusion makeup collection that debuted on the Chanel Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2012 runway. Peter Philips created a collection awash in blues and the new limited edition products are: Illusion D’Ombre Shadow in Apparition (gray-ish blue), Illusion D’Ombre Shadow in Destination (silvery satin blue), Le Crayon Yeux Eyeliner in Blue Aerien (intense luminous blue), and Le Vernis Nail Polish in Sky Line. Describing Chanel Le Vernis Sky Line, Peter Philips stated: “It’s a beautiful, easy to apply, pearly- on the edge of metallic- shade that matched perfectly with the range of blues that Karl used for this haute couture collection.”

From the images the Bleu Illusion collection is very pretty but there’s a part of me that’s having horrible flashbacks of the 1980s and blue eyeshadow. I think in moderation this look can be really pretty and complements different eye colors. The Exclusive Collection BLEU ILLUSION will be available at specific points of sales in July 2012.

Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2011 Inspiration: Paintings of Marie Laurencin

WWD reported that Karl Lagerfeld was inspired by the paintings of Marie Laurencin, namely the portrait she did of Mademoiselle Chanel, for the Spring 2011 Haute Couture collection.  The portrait of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel hangs in the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris and they have an interesting anecdote posted on their site:

In 1923 Laurencin was working on the costumes and sets for Les Biches (The Does) performed by Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Coco Chanel, who was creating costumes for the same company’s Le Train Bleu at the time, asked the artist to paint her portrait. Laurencin painted Chanel in a languid pose draped in blue and black with one shoulder bare. The fluid lines, subtly shifting colours and the sitter’s dreamy expression are typical of Laurencin’s work, but Chanel – designer of ‘the little black dress’ and the Chanel suit – turned the painting down, saying it did not look like her.

Marie Laurencin Portrait of Mademoiselle Chanel, 1923 Oil on canvas

Laurencin was part of the Cubist circle and was one of the few women who were part of the movement but also put her own spin on it. Her use of pastel colors and fluid curvey lines differentiated her from other Cubist painters. She painted mostly women and her style suited this subject perfectly. These are some other examples of Marie Laurencin’s work. You can see her use of pastels and how Karl was inspired by her pinks and greys and transformed these hints of color into an airy, light collection perfect for spring. Review of the collection to come shortly!
