Les Trompe-L'oeil de Chanel: Kate Lee Shares Her Tattoo Application Expertise
On March 5, in Los Angeles, celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee is sharing her expertise in temporary tattoo application to celebrate the launch of Chanel’s Les Trompe-L’oeil (aka Chanel temporary tattoos!). Ms. Lee will be at the Chanel on Robertson Blvd from 4pm to 7 pm.
The set includes 5 sheets with a total of 55 designs – each hand-drawn by Peter Philips, Chanel’s Global Creative Director of Makeup. Each trompe-l’oeil references a classic Chanel motif – pearls, the double C’s, and chain links with woven leather. Traditional tattoo references also include sparrows and cherry blossoms.
I love this set, though I will confess, I bought Les Trompe-L’oeil de Chanel purely as a collector’s piece – I won’t be using any of these temporary tattoos. I like to keep my skin canvas blank, but if you don’t want to commit to a real tattoo, then what it doesn’t get better than a Chanel temporary tattoo.
I was on a waiting list to get Les Trompe-L’oeil de Chanel but it may not be too late to get yours. Try contact Ruby at the Chanel at the Encore in Las Vegas and tell her Gabriella sent you!
Peter Philips, the artistic director of Chanel Beauty has made quite a splash since he joined the Chanel team in 2008. In his short time there he’s already created cult classics like Gold Fiction, Jade and Particulière. Now you can watch the master make-up artist at work behind the scenes at runway shows, in his studio, during beauty shoots and in business meetings.
I especially love these videos because you get rare glimpses into fittings (which still take place in Mademoiselle’s salon), details of some of the accessories, the Lesage embroidery studio, and even the archives where you catch sight of original Chanel beauty products and Coco’s very first little black dress. The much anticipated Chanel Spring Haute Couture 2010 show came and went and it temporarily made me forget I was sitting in dreary, rainy San Francisco and made me excited for spring. Karl Lagerfeld ditched the trademark black, white, and navy for a much lighter palette – one reminiscent of cotton candy and sherbet.
The collection consisted of tweed suits, short swing dresses and gorgeously intricate column gowns – all in candy colors from strawberry, peach, lemon and vanilla. Silver beading and metallic accents kept the pale shades from becoming boring and added just the right amount of pizazz – even Karl traded in his signature black tie for a metallic silver one! Chanel trademarks like pearls, camelias, bows and ruffles were all present – but used in different ways. Instead of rows of pearl necklaces, a pearl collar elegantly held a dress up. Ever flirtatious, the collection was very feminine and embodied Le sacre du printemps.
One of my favorite aspects of the show was the hair – it was swept up in a heart shape with giant bows and flowers front and center. Many of the bangs featured a white streak (the Dior Spring 2010 Haute Couture show also had white streaked hair – is this a new trend for Spring?). Makeup was kept light & sweet so as not to distract from the clothing. I’m still waiting to see detail shots but it looks like the hot new nail colors will be white and metallic silver – but I’ll have to see the close-ups to be sure.
In the mean time, you can see the full collection below.
Chanel is Bringing Lipstick Back: Vanessa Paradis for Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour
They say lipstick sales are “recession proof” – in fact – sales usually go up. Why? Because it’s an inexpensive way to look beautiful and freshen up your look. Chanel is taking note and bringing lipstick back to a young customer base that is infatuated with lip gloss. This March, Chanel is introducing Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour – and bringing back the lost art of sexily applying your lipstick.
The Rouge Coco line has 30 shades and each hue is named after an influential part of Coco Chanel’s life – Camelia, Mademoiselle, and Paris – to name a few. The shades come in one of four color families Roses-Pinks; Reds-Corals; Violets-Berries, and Neutrals-Browns and will be available in different global markets.
Like many Chanel cosmetics, the packaging takes it’s cue from Chanel’s history with black and gold detailing, interlocking C’s and the Chanel name embossed into each lipstick bullet. The Rouge Coco collection debuts in March with each lipstick retailing for $30 at fine retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Chanel.com.
Chanel comes out with it’s fair share of novelty items from bicycles to basket balls so I’m not sure I was surprised to learn that the tattoos that the models were sporting on the runway at the Chanel Spring 2010 Ready to Wear show will be available for sale this spring.
Les Trompe L’œil de Chanel, a set of 55 individual tattoos, will retail for £49 (or roughly $78 US). I can’t say I’m a fan of temporary tattoos but I must have this! I probably wouldn’t even use them it’s just something that I need to possess. I’m sure there will be mass hysteria so get prepared to wait in line.
A few weeks ago we posted about the opening of the Chanel Shanghai boutique and Chanel “métiers d’art” Paris Shanghai collection. Chanel recently launched a Paris Shanghai website devoted to the Shanghai happenings, complete with sneak previews of the collection, video teasers, and an interview with Peter Marino, the architect of the Shanghai Chanel boutique. Not surprisingly, the collection will feature lots of red – a very popular color in Chinese culture. I’m already loving what I see – especially the lace, jackets, print and lip color! The “métiers d’art” collection is one of my favorite collections of the year, and if you’re looking forward to the show like me, we’ll have to wait until December 3rd for the premier of Karl Lagerfeld’s short movie about the collection and until December 4th for the runway show. Until then, this will have to sate our appetites…
Vanessa Paradis (aka Johnny Depp’s French ladyfriend) has had a long relationship with the House of Chanel. The affair began in 1992 when she was the face of the Coco fragrance…

Years later, she was the face of the Cambon handbag collection.
Vanessa Paradis for Chanel Lipstick
Yesterday, Chanel announced that Mlle. Paradis would be the face of the Rouge Coco de Chanel lipstick. Who better than the lady who gets to lock lips with Johnny Depp?? Chanel always does a great job with their ad campaigns and I can’t wait to see what they come up with for the Rouge Coco de Chanel lipstick when it launches in 2010.
Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and while we’re stoked to honor the most important ladies in our lives, let’s be honest – sometimes it’s pretty tough picking out a present for the woman who has everything. Because come on, how many different types of perfume can you gift your mom with each year?
For Mother’s Day ‘09, Chanel’s got you covered. The iconic beauty brand recently introduced their Lumieres Celestes Collection, which consists of eight cosmos-inspired lip glosses to give Mama that perfect pout this holiday. The different shades of pinks and peaches are a perfect addition to her summer beauty routine, and we don’t doubt that you’ll be tempted to scoop up a tube or two for yourself. After all, why should Mom get to have ALL the fun? (We won’t judge if you end up purchasing a gloss or two for your own collection… We’d probably do the same.)
Chanel Lumieres Celestes Collection
Pair one of these attention-grabbing glosses with a bottle of Chanel’s Le Vernis Nail Colour, which is available in four complementary (and chip-resistant!) shades, from Dazzling cherry red to subdued Mica Rose. Not only are these cosmetics an economical way to gift your mom with a designer label for less, but they’re sure to provide grounds for bonding this Mother’s Day. (Gift idea: treat Mom to a mani/pedi with her newest shade of Chanel polish!) Complete the gift set by whipping up a fabulous breakfast-in-bed for Mom to show her just how appreciative you are.
