“Coco” Musical Takes The Stage in London

coco musical katharine hepburnIn 1969, Katharine Hepburn starred as Coco Chanel in Coco a musical comedy on Broadway about Mlle. Chanel herself.  The producer, Fred Brisson, had been trying to get permission from Coco Chanel to do a musical based upon her life and after years of persuasion, Chanel finally consented.  At the time, Coco was the most expensive Broadway production to ever grace the NYC stages.  The 250 costumes, based on the designs of Coco Chanel, were designed by Sir Cecil Beaton.  (Info and Image above from Chanel and Her World: Friends, Fashion and Fame by Edmonde Charles – Roux, p. 372-73).

Having read many biographies on Gabrielle Chanel, a musical comedy doesn’t really seem fitting for her life (a moody art film seems more like it).  Coco didn’t do to well with the critics but it sold our shows night after night.  Well, now Coco is being reprived by London’s Sadler’s Wells Theater as part of a series called Lost Musicals 2011 – a European premier.  If you are in the area this may be fun to check out.  The show runs in May and June and tickets can be purchased online.

Video of Coco Chanel’s Apartment at 31 Rue Cambon

I just came across this video of Coco Chanel’s apartment at 31 Rue Cambon. I have to say that since not everyone is allowed up there, I thought the quality of the video would be a bit better – it comes across as a bit touristy/amateur – just sayin’. But, it is an inside look into the legendary apartment so I’ll take what I can get! Hopefully, one day I’ll have a video of my own :)

Karl Lagerfeld Sketches Coco Chanel

Last year, Justine Picardie released Coco Chanel: The Legend and The Life.  Karl Lagerfeld enjoyed the bio so much that it inspired him to sketch Coco Chanel for a new edition that will be published by Steidl.  Picardie and Lagerfeld will host a cocktail reception for the 2nd edition at Galignani, one of Lagerfeld’s favorite bookstores in Paris.  A German version releases in April and the English version will release in June.

Lily Allen to Wear a Chanel Wedding Dress

OOOH! Word on the Web is that Lily Allen will wear a Chanel wedding dress. You may remember that she was the face of the Coco Cocoon collection and sang at the Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear show.  She’s engaged to Sam Cooper and she was in attendance in Paris at the Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Ready-to-Wear show. She told WWD: “I’m here to see Karl for my wedding dress.” So exciting! I can not wait to see this!

Blake Lively Hosts Chanel Mademoiselle Dinner in Paris

Blake Lively Hosts Chanel Mademoiselle Dinner in Paris

So, the rumors weren’t true…Blake Lively can’t attend the Chanel Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear show in Paris because of a scheduling conflict with the Gossip Girl shooting schedule – not because she thinks celebrities shouldn’t sit front row.  Whew!

Since she couldn’t make it to the show, Blake Lively hosted a dinner in Paris at the Chanel couture salon, complete with performance by Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine.  A pink rose décor and three course meal by  a two-star Michelin chef set the scene for the who’s who of fashion elite including Lou Doillon, Karen Elson, Anna Wintour and her daughter Bee Shaffer, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Chanel spokespeople Anna Mouglalis (bags, fine jewelry and watches), Elisa Sednaoui (glasses) and Chanel’s brand ambassadors Leigh Lezark, Caroline Sieber.

It sounds like it was a lovely event.  Dear Chanel, please bring on some blog ambassadors and please let moi be one!

Chanel + Colette Ephemeral Boutique (Pop-Up Shop)

My favorite brand is teaming up with my favorite Parisian boutique, Colette, to create a separate ephemeral boutique (or pop up shop as we Americans like to say) from March 1st to 10th on 336-340 rue Saint-Honoré.  The boutique will span 200 m² and has an industrial feel as the setting is “a former garage turned into a giant living display space.”

The fashion installation will be a multi-sensory delight with visual arts, musical performances, fashion, and sweet treats “resulting in a fun-fuelled, creative mix and match by Chanel and Colette with a rock ‘n’ roll vibe.”

Chanel 2011 Spring-Summer pieces will be sold alongside select pieces by young designers curated by Colette.  Artists including Kevin Lyons, Soledad, André, Fafi and SO-ME will be on hand to customized legendary Chanel bags.  Karl Lagerfeld designed a collector’s doll and other special Chanel products will be sold including bag charms, helmets and cameras.  For this momentous occasion, Chanel created a compilation CD and scented candles.  To top it off there will be a Chanel nail bar and a cupcake bar!

This may be the best pop-up shop EVER.  I almost want to buy a ticket to Paris to see this for myself.  I hope the special edition products – especially the doll – will be sold online!  I NEED ONE!

Here’s a breakdown of the events – if you live in Paris and you go – I will be living vicariously through you!

Program:

Friends of Chanel are special guests to be discovered as in house DJs, and five artists invited by Colette will be customising Chanel bags, upon request.

March 1: Kevin Lyons, designer and illustrator, will be customising bags, 4pm – 6pm
March 2: Camellia demonstration by a Lemarié craftsman, 3pm – 6pm
March 3: The illustrator Soledad will be customising bags, 4pm – 6pm
March 4: Harpsichord performance by the pianist and composer Maxence Cyrin, from 5pm
March 5: Graffiti artist André will be customising bags, 3pm – 6pm
March 7: Graffiti artist Fafi will be customising bags, 4pm – 6pm
March 8: Chanel nail bar, 3pm – 6pm
March 9: SO-ME, graphic artist and illustrator, will be customising bags, 4pm – 6pm

Chanel introduces a trio of favorite colors that will keep you looking peachy keen called “Endless Summer” – the perfect colors to complement your tan (which of course, Coco made fashionable).

I was a history major so I love history – add fashion to the mix and we have a winner! Chanel News gave us the inside scoop on the history of the decor of the Spring 2011 Haute Couture show.

More history! This time, Chanel News gives us some info on the architectural history of iconic 31 Rue Cambon. It turns out Coco was a real estate mogul too!

Chanel had a site devoted to Valentine’s Day – it’s still up and definitely worth checking out. I NEED the double lion head bangle bracelet!

Chanel News just posted a video that shows the details of some of the pieces from the Spring 2011 Haute Couture collection.  I wish I could see all of the pieces close up – many of them look simple from afar but upon closer examination you see all of the intricacies – just gorgeous!

Chanel 2011 Côte d’Azur Cruise Collection Post Cards

A few months back we mentioned that Chanel opened a pop-up shop in the Meatpacking District of New York to house the Chanel Côte d’Azur Cruise Collection.  As part of the St. Tropez feeling of the shop, customers could pick up Chanel postcards featuring images of Georgia May Jagger from the Cruise Collection ad campaign.

I wasn’t able to make it to the shop but Ruby from the Chanel at the Encore in Las Vegas was nice enough to send me a set of the postcards.  This “thank you” is long overdue but you can see the beautiful stationary and postcards below…

I just got back from NY for Fashion Week and it was a whirlwind trip and I’m still trying to catch up on posts. In the mean time here’s some of the best Chanel-related news from around the web…

  • Vanessa Paradis will be wearing custom Chanel designed by Karl Lagerfeld for her acoustic set at New York’s The Town Hall venue.  He shot Paradis last year at Versailles for a Vanessa Paradis DVD collector’s set.  WWD.

  • Safe sex is always in style – especially when you “keep it classy” in Chanel (fake) condoms.  Refinery 29.
  • To sell or not to sell?  That’s the question Karl seems to have been asking himself this past week about his NYC Gramercy Park apartment.  Apparently, he’s decided not to sell… WWD.
  • Lauren Conrad celebrated her 25th Birthday in Las Vegas complete with a Chanel bag birthday cake!  PopSugar

  • Chanel’s new mirror sunglasses make it easy to check your lipstick… BlackBook
