Adieu, Mademoiselle

mademoiselle coco chanel by douglas kirkland

Prime Minister François Fillon of France banished the term “Mademoiselle” from official forms and registries today. The change was made after months of pressure from French feminist organizations who argued that distinguishing a woman based on marital status is sexist as there is no male equivalent.

Coco Chanel was addressed as Mademoiselle even through her eighties since she was never married. I wonder how she would feel about this change? There are many Mademoiselles, but only one Coco Chanel.

Fashion In The Street: Chanel Sightings in Las Vegas

Last week I was in Las Vegas attending PROJECT trade show and was able to photograph some ladies wearing Chanel.  Being Las Vegas there were definitely many ladies wearing Chanel but the camera wasn’t out and ready at the moment so there were many missed opportunities.  Here are some goodies for you….

Denise Fleming from Look Los Angeles wore a great bag and sandals…

Here are some other great bags – since I take the photos quickly I can’t verify authenticity – but these sure look good!

Chanel Boutique Visit – Bellagio Las Vegas

chanel bellagio las vegas

Las Vegas de Chanel exclusive accessories Chanel Bellagio Las Vegas

Last week I was in Las Vegas to attend some fashion trades hows and I happened to be staying at the Bellagio – the location of the newly remodeled Chanel boutique and home to the Las Vegas de Chanel collection. One of the Chanel ladies, Giselle Manansala, invited me to visit her at the boutique on my trip.  I wanted to see the remodeled boutique and the Las Vegas collection so we set up a time to meet.  I’m so glad that I met with Giselle because she was a wonderful host and gave me a true Chanel experience.

My first matter of business was checking out the Las Vegas de Chanel cosmetics.  Luckily, there was still stock left  but I didn’t know which items from the collection I should get. Giselle sat me down and gave me a mini-makeover using items from the collection and I loved the finished look.  I ended up getting the Lucky Stripes palette and Gold Fingers from the Las Vegas collection.  I also purchased a brown liquid liner to complete the look and an eyeliner in Clair to combat tired-looking eyes per Peter Philips makeup secrets.

Next, Giselle gave me a tour of the boutique – the Chanel boutique at the Bellagio is one of the finer boutiques because it carries fine jewelry and bags made from exotic skins.  Of course as I walked through the boutique I wanted everything that I saw, one thing was more beautiful than the next.  Giselle showed me the VIP sitting room which was lovely and had the most gorgeous couch I had ever seen – definitely too pretty to sit on! Afterward she showed me the fitting rooms which were larger than my NYC apartment in my student days.  The rooms were spacious and included a sitting room for people who may be shopping with you.  My favorite feature of the fitting rooms was the independent thermostat that you could set to your comfort and an iPod/iPhone docking station.  Chanel thinks of everything when it comes to a customer’s comfort – after all, what is more luxurious than that?

I visited the boutique with my tiny dancer and my husband.  As it was late in the evening, the tiny dancer was a bit tired but Giselle was wonderful with her.  Though the Tiny Dancer is not even two she’s a girly girl and loves watching me put on makeup -in fact I have to give her unused makeup tools to play with to keep her busy.  When Giselle saw that the Tiny Dancer was getting bored, she put together a little goodie bag of samples for her to play with.  The Tiny Dancer was so excited and the rest of our time there went very smoothly.  Not only was Giselle wonderful, all of the staff was friendly including security.  Everyone was very warm and welcoming.

I had a lovely experience at the Chanel boutique at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.  If you are visiting Las Vegas you definitely need to see this boutique.  Ask for Giselle and let her know Gabriella, La Chanelphile, sent you!

P.S. If you are looking for the Las Vegas de Chanel collection it has shipped to other Chanel boutiques and is available now online in the U.S.

I love the 1920s – it’s one of my favorite decades and I wish I could have lived during that time. In a recent shoot for Harper’s Bazaar, Karl Lagerfeld shot a fashion spread for Harper’s Bazaar entitled Café Society inspired by the Jazz Age. It’s a lovely shoot and one of the shots features three Chanel dresses from the Spring 2012 collection. Check out the video below to hear Karl’s thoughts on the shoot…

Behind the Scenes Photos of the New Boy Bag Ad Campaign

chanel alice dellal and karl lagerfeld boy chanel making of campaign
The new Chanel Boy Bag ad campaign featuring Alice Dellal and shot by Karl Lagerfeld should be surfacing soon but until then we can get a sneak peek by checking out the behind-the-scenes images of the photo shoot.  You can see from the photos that the Chanel team did a great job of balancing Alice Dellal’s edgy look and giving it a feminine Chanel sheen.  It’s the best I’ve ever seen her look.  What do you think?

For more on what the ads will look like, also check out the mini film My New Friend Boy.

Vintage Chanel Jewelry on Yoox.com

I don’t know where all of this stock of vintage Chanel jewelry is coming from but it seems like there’s a vintage Chanel jewelry sale every week. The latest is on Yoox.com and I’m jealous of anyone that buys anything from this sale. I always manage to want the pieces that are out of my price range – hopefully you’ll find something in yours.

Chanel Joaillerie Spring 2012 – 80th Anniversary Collection

Chanel Joaillerie Spring 2012 Chanel Cosmos watch open

Last month I posted about Chanel Joaillerie’s Spring 2012 collection which pays homage to the 80th Anniversary of Coco Chanel’s 1932 Bijoux de Diamants collection.  I happened to find more images online and each of these pieces is breathtakingly beautiful.  I have never before seen such exquisite jewels.  Each piece in the collection is one of a kind and is set to tour the world in a traveling exhibition.  I hope the exhibition comes to a city in the U.S – I would love to see these pieces up close and personal.
