Carnet Vendôme Illustrations by Karl Lagerfeld

carnet vendome

Since the set of the Chanel Fall-Winter 2011 Haute Couture presentation was a recreation of Place Vendôme, it’s only fitting that Carnet Vendôme was handed out to all the guests at the show.  Carnet Vendôme is a guide that has information on the more than 60 Vendôme members, many of which are luxury retailers, including of course Chanel Fine Jewelry.  Carnet Vendôme is printed in three languages (French, English and Chinese) and for the current issue, Karl Lagerfeld drew all of the illustrations.  You can find Carnet Vendôme at Galignani bookstore for 10€.

First Look: Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s

karl lagerfeld for macys

The internet is abuzz with sneak peeks of Karl Lagerfeld’s 45-piece limited-edition collection for Macy’s.  It looks like Karl’s signature stuff: lots of black and white; high collars and tees with his face on them (which of course, I want!).  The ad campaign stars Coco Rocha shot by Karl Lagerfeld in what looks to be his library (or a recreation of it).  We’ll have to wait until the pieces are in Macy’s on August 31st but until then you can see the collection below and start deciding what pieces you want to get…

New Chanel Biography Coming Soon: Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life by Lisa Chaney

Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life

Everyone’s going cuckoo for Coco lately.  She’s always intrigued and her influence is far reaching, but the past few years have seen a tremendous surge of media devoted to Mademoiselle Chanel.  In the past three years we’ve seen two feature films (Coco Avant Chanel and Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky), a made-for-tv movie (terrible) and several biographies including Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life by Justine Picardie and a re-issue of Paul Morand’d biography, Coco Chanel.  Lisa Chaney is throwing her hat into the mix with a new biography out this November entitled, Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life.

Part of the intrigue of Coco Chanel was that she was a habitual liar and her life story changed each time she told it.  Habitual liar is maybe not the correct phrase, but she was a master of creating a persona – one that we are all still obsessed with today so it seems she was quite successful at it, non?  Lisa Chaney would like to shed some light on areas that are otherwise clouded and she “claims to have concrete evidence that the designer used drugs, embraced bisexuality and had an affair with Salvador Dalí while he was married.”  From that sentence alone I feel like Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life, may read more like a tabloid than a biography but only time will tell.  Press copies go out in October so I will let you know then.  In the mean time, if you can’t wait, Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life, is available for pre-order now on Amazon.com.

Maison Michel Fall 2011 Lookbook

Maison Michel Fall 2011 Ready-to-WearMaison Michel is a millinery atelier that was purchased by Chanel in 2002 as a part of PARAFFECTION, a solution to keep haute couture ateliers alive.  In doing so, Chanel is keeping a rich legacy of knowledge and tradition intact and preventing fashion techniques from becoming lost arts, as well as ensuring that haute couture remains robust.

Maison Michel makes all of the hats for Chanel but also releases its own ready-to-wear collection.  The Fall 2011 collection just released and the look book images are beautiful.  Shot by Karl Lagerfeld and featuring Clemence Poesy, Sasha Pivovarova and Anna Calvi, the simplicity of the black and white images is juxtapozed against the intricate details of the head pieces. I love the lace headbands, the spiked headbands – really I love every piece.  There’s something for different looks and occasions.   I also love that Maison Michel specializes in millinery and that is how Coco Chanel herself got her start.  Check out the look book…

It’s Official, Perfume Makes Women Feel Sexy

marilyn monroe chanel no5Ok, maybe it ‘s not totally official but a poll by a British drugstore surveyed 2,000 women to see what beauty tricks made them feel beautiful.  Not surprisingly, more than half of the women said their number one trick to feel sexy is to put on perfume.  This poll just confirms what Coco Chanel knew all along – why else would she say to “wear perfume where you want to be kissed”?

all that glitters - chanel beauty editorial
Last week we featured our first beauty editorial, All That Glitters. We used the Illusions d’Ombre de Chanel from the Fall 2011 Chanel Beauté collection. Makeup artist Jenni Tay had a great time experimenting with different looks – combining colors and even putting the Illusion d’Ombre eyeshadow on the models’ lips. Here’s how you can get the looks…

Au Revoir

amy winehouse chanelThis past weekend we lost one of the greatest voices of our time.  Not only was Amy Winehouse infinitely talented, but she made her mark on fashion.  Her signature beehive and black cat eye makeup even influenced Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Pre-Fall 2008 runway looks.  I’m sorry we only got to enjoy her for such a short time but we are lucky that we heard her voice at all.

Olivia Wilde in Chanel Beauté at “Cowboys & Aliens” Premiere

Olivia Wilde in Chanel Beauté at "Cowboys & Aliens" Premiere

Over the weekend, the summer blockbuster Cowboys & Aliens premiered. I have to admit, the juxtaposition of cowboys with aliens is like taking two genres and mashing them up together so I’m quite curious about this move. But I digress. The real news is that Olivia Wilde is starting in the film and she wore a Chanel Beauté look to the premiere created by Celebrity Makeup Artist Melanie Ingelssis. Her romantic look was beautiful – especially paired with Ms. Wilde’s lace gown. Here’s a breakdown from the makeup artist herself on how she created Olivia’s look – and how you can replicate it.

This weekend, Celebrity Makeup Artist Melanie Ingelssis created Olivia Wilde’s red carpet look for the premiere of one of summer’s hottest new movies, “Cowboys and Aliens”.  To off-set Olivia’s romantic gown and simple hair, Melanie and Olivia decided the focus of the beauty look would be on the eyes. Using CHANEL products, Melanie created a strong smoky eye balanced by soft, luminous skin.

To enhance Olivia’s gorgeous baby blues, Melanie began by using CHANEL Intense Eye Pencil to create the shape of the smoky eye, but kept it true to Olivia’s shape as opposed to taking it out too much. She then rimmed her entire eyes, including the inside of the waterline with a thick line, also using the soft, easy-to-use kohl pencil. She then used Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadow in Mirifique, a new long-wearing, shimmering cream eyeshadow from CHANEL, all over Olivia’s lids to create a black base. She took the cream shadow up to the crease of Olivia’s eyes and underneath, blending it with the kohl pencil so there were no harsh lines.  With a black shadow, she redefined the outer and inner areas of the eyes that needed to be darker, creating a sexy and smudgy look. Finally, according to Melanie, “the trick to a beautiful smoky eye is blending, so I took a clean blending brush – with no color on it – and with one motion, I blended the upper and lower colors together.” To complete the look, Melanie curled Olivia’s lashes and added two coats of Inimitable Intense Mascara.

Melanie began prepping Olivia’s skin with CHANEL Sublimage Regenerating Fluid to give her complexion a radiant glow. She followed with Mat Lumière Makeup SPF 15 which she chose for the foundation’s long-lasting formula. She then highlighted Olivia’s face with CHANEL Sheer Illuminating Fluid.
