Chanel Cruise 2012/13 Collection Review

Chanel Cruise 2012 2013

“I always liked Versailles. I think more French you cannot do.” – Karl Lagerfeld (WWD)

On Monday, Karl Lagerfeld unveiled the Chanel Cruise 2012/13 collection set amidst the gardens and fountains of château de Versailles. Inspired by the château’s last residents Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, Karl’s collection was a delicate mixture of Rococo and Rock ‘n Roll. Perhaps inspired by his latest muse Alice Dellal, or Sofia Coppola’s rendition of Marie Antoinette, Karl stated: ‘It’s Coco Rock, Not Rococo!’

The soft pinks hues in the Chanel Cruise 2012/13 are reminiscent of sweet macaroons and were a soft counter-point to the stark black and white pieces of the collection. And, of course it wouldn’t be RoCoCo without some bold gold pieces and accents.

Karl Lagerfeld managed to make 18th century fashion modern. He reinvigorated historical items like panniers – the side hoops that extend the width of skirts on the side but are left flat in the front and back. We saw pannier-like references in everything from mini-skirts to shorts. For Chanel Cruise 2012/13 Karl Lagerfeld also brought back fichus, neck kerchiefs that are tucked into the neckline. In true Chanel fashion, Lagerfeld also borrowed from the boys and put the ladies in breeches – knee-length pants that fit snugly – and waist coats.

The fabrications included pastel tweeds, sheer fabrics like lace and chiffon, and lovely watercolor florals. I haven’t seen close up pictures yet but from a distance you can see the intricacy in the details – the ruffles, floral embroideries and beading – all of it makes the garments look as if they stepped out of the 18th century but look as fresh and modern as ever. Other highlights from the collection included cropped jackets, palazzo pants, a tweed cargo-pant “track suit and feminine little day dresses perfect for afternoon tea, sight-seeing, shopping, lounging and all the fancy things that people do who “cruise” in the winter.

As is my custom my eyes went to the accessories first, and apparel after. The shoes were a metallic mix of platform sneaker meets creeper. I personally was not a fan of the platform sneaker but I liked the heeled booties and sandals the models wore with dresses. There were new interpretations of the Boy Bag, translucent cuffs, chokers, wide-brimmed hats and most importantly a quilted watering-can – for your camellia garden of course.

The hair and beauty were gorgeous as always – I’ll be posting about it separately soon so stay tuned. In the mean time, enjoy… click on the first image to view larger photos in a slide show.

Chanel Cruise 2012/13 Showing at Versailles

Coco Chanel at Château de Versailles photographed by Douglas Kirkland
I love the Chanel cruise shows because Karl always takes us to luxurious locales to soak in the sun.  The past years have taken us to Miami, the Venice Lido, St. Tropez and Antibes.  This year he’s not going to the beach but he’s certainly not skimping on luxury – Lagerfeld is presenting the Chanel Cruise 2012 show at Château de Versailles. The presentation will be set in the gardens which also inspired the set for the Chanel Spring-Summer 2011 collection based on the film Last Year at Marienbad. I can’t wait until the evening of May 14th to see the collection!

View Chanel’s “The Little Black Jacket” Exhibit Online!

chanel the little black jacket exhibit online
For those of us who were not fancy enough to be invited to the opening of Chanel’s “The Little Black Jacket” exhibit or don’t live in Japan (or won’t be visiting any time soon), we can still see the stunning work of Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld. All of the photos from The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld are on view on a new Chanel microsite devoted to the exhibit. The site is a bit interactive as hints of photos rotate you click on one to see the full photo.  It will take some time to see all of the photos – I kind of wish there was a way to just scroll through them all but that’s just the rushed person in me who has no time for everything.  By displaying the photos the way they did, I think Chanel intends for you  to peruse and discover as you would in a real gallery.  Enjoy!

Chanel: The Little Black Jacket Photo Shoot with Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld

“The CHANEL jacket symbolises a timelessly fashionable form of nonchalant feminine elegance: it belongs to every era” – Karl Lagerfeld.

Chanel sent a video of a behind-the scenes look at the making of the The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic jacket revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld. Watching this video is like watching the dream team of fashion at work with Peter Philips doing makeup, Carine Roitfeld styling and Karl Lagerfeld photographing. I’ve always wanted a Chanel Little Black Jacket and now I want one even more!

The images for this latest project were shot in Cannes, in the South of France, and then in New York, before finishing up in Paris in Karl Lagerfeld’s studio. Over a hundred models and celebrities have been captured by the designer’s lens. Actors, artists, singers, rock stars – the book’s impressive line-up encompasses all aspects of contemporary culture today including Georgia May Jagger, Carine Roitfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker, Virginie Ledoyen, Akuol de Mabior, Virginie Viard – and they all wear CHANEL’s uniquely timeless and versatile little black jacket in their own special way.

The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, will be available in bookstores beginning Autumn 2012.

Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear Collection Details

Chanel Fall Winter 2012 2013 Ready to Wear Collection Details

Last week Chanel presented its Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear collection and accessory-wise this was not my favorite show – don’t hate me, I’m just being honest. I found that the cuffs with large crystals sometimes read a little bit New Age-hippy-dippy to me. That said, there were also spectacular pieces like the collars/chest plates, the sexy line of the shoes, the mesh gloves (and the length of the gloves!) and the handbags (not counting the crushed velvet ones). I’m sure as more detailed images are released I will find more to love. For now, we’ll have to content ourselves with these…
