Last week, the BBC posted a radio segment and article on the story behind Chanel No.5. If you haven’t heard it I would definitely give it a listen below. The iconography and branding of Chanel No.5 is one of my favorites – of any product – so I put together some of my favorite Chanel No.5 images. Some are vintage ads, some are product shots, some are works of art inspired by the fragrance. Enjoy!

Chanel Mobile: “Glamour on the Go”

Last week, Chanel released a mobile version of their website that allows you to purchase skincare, makeup and fragrance from your mobile phone. I’ve seen many mobile versions of websites – mostly blogs (LaChanelphile mobile coming soon!) but this is the first I’ve seen with e-commerce capability. Now, if you need a Chanel No. 5 fix you can get it anytime, anywhere. If you want to see collections, the latest shows and the Chanel blog, well, there’s an App for that (sorry, I couldn’t help myself). Chanel No.5 at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris

Starting January 6, the exterior of Paris’ Musée d’Orsay will be graced with the silhouette of the iconic Chanel No.5 bottle. The image of the flacon measures 2,890 square feet and is covered with 1,200 handmade sequins. Dazzling!

Vintage Chanel Advertisements

Two of my favorite things are Chanel and advertisements – when you put the two together, you can’t go wrong. I especially love vintage Chanel No 5 perfume ads and ads featuring apparel and accessories in the early days of Karl Lagerfeld designing for Chanel. When I was in Junior High School, I would rip out Chanel ads and paste them into my scrapbook. Chanel Announces New Coco Mademoiselle Advertising Campaign

Chanel seems to be on a fragrance ad campaign roll. It seems like every time I post about a new ad campaign, another one is right behind it. Soon after the Scorsese film ad for Bleu de Chanel, Chanel has announced that it’s filming a new Coco Mademoiselle ad campaign featuring the fragrances face, Keira Knightley. Directed by Joe Wright, Chanel continues the tradition of pairing it’s actresses who star in their campaigns with directors the actresses have worked with.* Knightley and Wright worked together on the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice.

Chanel N˚5 Wins Fragrance Foundation FiFi Award

The winners of the Fragrance Foundation’s FiFi Awards were announced and Chanel N˚5′s “No.5: Train de nuit” won the award for Best Media Campaign. As you may recall, the campaign for Chanel N˚5 feautured French ingénue Audrey Tautou and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who directed her in her breakthrough film, “Amélie.”

The campaign certainly deserves this honor as it was the best media campaign I have seen for a fragrance. Not only was the film beautiful, but all of the correlative marketing materials – from the website to print ads – were gorgeous and evocative of the classic Chanel N˚5 scent.

Coco Chanel is a fashion icon but what launched her into fashion cult status is the worldwide popularity of her signature scent, Chanel No.5. The house of Chanel has released countless fragrances – one more compelling than the next. I personally love Coco Mademoiselle, Allure, Chanel No.5 Sensual Elixir and my current favorite Beige.

Nylon TV‘s Factory Girl paid a visit to the famed Chanel Perfume Lab where “all the magic happens” to sit down and chat with famed “nose” (i.e., perfumer) Jacques Polge. So jealous! I want her job! Watch the video below …

Martin Scorses Directs Chanel Men's Fragrance Ad Starting Gaspard Ulliel

A month ago I reported that Martin Scorsese was spotted at Moto in Brooklyn shooting a new Chanel ad campaign. Word has just surfaced that the ad he was filming was for Chanel’s new men’s fragrance. The ad features French actor Gaspard Ulliel.

Andrea D’Avack, president of Chanel Fragrance and Beauté, stated that “The ads have been shot in New York, the city which is so inherently part of Martin Scorsese’s cinematographic vocabulary.” (WWD)

Chanel has a long history of working with acclaimed film directors from Baz Luhrmann (with muse Nicole Kidman) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (with mus Audrey Tautou ), both for Chanel No.5 at different times.

Chanel works with movie directors because they bring depth, emotion and what we call in French ‘a supplement of soul,’ or an added dimension,” said D’Avack, pointing to films such as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” and “Goodfellas” as examples of Scorsese’s vision. “In the case of Martin Scorsese, we knew we would definitely have a man’s world full of complexity that is also adrenaline-driven, and of course, amazing images. This is the first men’s ad of its kind that I will see and I’m looking forward to it! I love Martin Scorsese and I think he’s a wonderful choice to film a men’s fragrance ad. He’ll be able to capture the essence of “man” without coming off as to macho – can’t wait to see!

Martin Scorsese Films Chanel Ad in Brooklyn at Moto

The rumors are apparently true. The Dossier Journal reported today that they saw some lights, camera, action! at Moto in Brooklyn last night. Chanel has a tradition of pairing directors with their muses for ad campaigns; Nicole Kidman and Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) worked together for Chanel No. 5, as did Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie) with Audrey Tautou for the latest Chanel No. 5 ads. I wonder if Martin Scorsese will be teamed up with some muses of the past… will it be Jodi Foster (Taxi Driver) or Sharon Stone (Casino)? Only time will tell, but I cannot wait to see this ad!
