Chanel Links: Thanksgiving 2011 Weekend

I took a much-needed few days off to celebrate Thanksgiving (and my birthday) but that didn’t stop Chanel or Karl Lagerfeld from making the news. Let’s play a little catch-up to see what happened in the Chanel world last week…

I’m not sure why everyone on the interweb is so surprised that Karl Lagerfeld makes a lot of money considering who he works for and the breadth of his projects – but he does, ok? WWD

As part of the project, he will create a series of collectible sketches, illustrations and columns as well as choose the stories for the newspaper and give his notoriously provocative comments on the news of the day.”  Metro

Karl Lagerfeld, Economist?

That Karl Lagerfeld is talented and immensely creative is unquestionable.  But maybe he should leave coming up with solutions for fixing an ailing economy to economists.  His idea to fix the economy? Compulsory shopping.  Believe me, I personally would love this but I’m not sure the people he’s talking about would.  WWD posed the question of how to fix the economy to several designers – here’s Karl Lagerfeld’s answer:

I think they should make a tax so that when you earn a certain amount of money, you have to spend a certain amount on shopping. To buy whatever….And that way, we create tons of jobs. I think it’s a good idea. What I hate is people with a lot of money who don’t spend it. Money is there to be spent, because it creates jobs….Believe me, it’s not a bad idea. You buy whatever it is; food, furniture, design, clothes, cars…whatever creates jobs.

Diane Kruger Calls Uncle Karl Her Mentor

Diane Kruger has had a longstanding relationship with Karl Lagerfeld and the House of Chanel.  In a recent interview, she discussed how the relationship began and how she feels about Uncle Karl…

He’s like my stepfather; I love Karl. He’s the funniest person I know. He’s a big inspiration actually…I’m not a very good impersonator, my friends maybe, but not famous people. I can do Karl very well, Karl Lagerfeld, because he speaks the same in every language….I had modeled for Chanel quite a bit when I was younger, and I’ve known Karl since I was 16. When I started to act, they’d lend me clothes, and Karl designed a haute-couture gown for me that I wore to the premiere of ‘Troy’ in Cannes. I still have the sketch. I look at him as a mentor.

Santa Karl Wishes You a Merry Christmas!

karl lagerfeld chanel christmas window at printemps

Printemps, a Paris department store unveiled its Chanel Christmas-themed windows today with Vanessa Paradis, Bruno Pavlovsky (president of Chanel fashion) and Santa Karl himself in attendance. The window features dolls in Karl Lagerfeld’s likeness in an array of poses and activities all over a replica of Paris which includes an Eiffel Tower and the column from Place Vendôme – complete with double-Cs on top of course.

“I guess I’m a doll you can’t play with,” the designer told style.com at the unveiling. “In a way, I’m lucky. I don’t sing, I’m not an actor, I don’t make scandals, I’m just working class.” (Belfast Telegraph)

The display is so fun! I wonder if the Karl Lagerfeld dolls will be for sale?

As for what Santa Karl will be doing for the holidays – he likes to be alone…

Everyone I know is leaving [Paris], but I stay home because it’s the only moment I can work on the Couture quietly, sketch, and take care of my books and houses – all the things I never have time to do the rest of the year. For me the ultimate luxury is to be alone… to have time for myself, not look at my watch, and do whatever I want, whenever I want.

Karl-Shaped Eyeshadow – Karl Lagerfeld for Sephora

karl lagerfeld for sephora eyeshadow
I was able to find more images from the Karl Lagerfeld for Sephora collection that those of us in the U.S. unfortunately won’t have access to :( Three words: Karl-shaped-eyeshadow. If a doll, snowglobe and nail polish with killer packaging weren’t enough, the Karl Lagerfeld for Sephora collection also includes a makeup case with Karl’s likeness on it and an eyeshadow palette with Karl-shaped eyeshadow. The more I find out about this collection, the more disappointed I get that it won’t be available in the U.S.! So jealous of those of you in Singapore and Europe!

Karl Lagerfeld for Sephora Nail Polish Set

Karl Lagerfeld for Sephora Nail Polish

Yesterday I posted about Karl Lagerfeld’s holiday collection for Sephora and mentioned that in addition to a snow globe and a doll, he also created some cosmetics.  Part of the cosmetics collection includes a set of black and gold nail polish and it comes in this really cute box.  I’m so sad this is not a U.S. release!

Dear Roberto Cavalli, Please Shut Up

roberto cavalli dressed as karl lagerfeld

Roberto Cavalli recently opened a boutique in the Ginza section of Tokyo. When asked about why he chose his particular location he stated: “I want it to be that [shoppers] come to find me. They shouldn’t find me by accident walking in Ginza. I think this is a really winning strategy. I will demonstrate this to the dear Messrs. Chanel or other people like that. Fine, you dress the grandmothers and the mothers and I’ll dress their kids.

Mr. Cavalli, please don’t kid yourself. The only people that buy your clothes are people who have terrible taste.  And, please don’t dress up as Karl Lagerfeld anymore.  Thank you.

Florence Welch on Working With Karl Lagerfeld

karl lagerfeld florence welch

It was funny because Karl and I were doing a shoot for Japanese Vogue, where I was talking about the underwater themes in my record, and he was saying how he wanted to do an underwater theme for his show. Then he said: ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if you came down on a big wire like you were floating?’ and I was like: ‘What?’ And he said: ‘We can get all these harps together…’ and all these ideas were coming to him just really off the cuff… so I thought he was joking and then he put his hand on mine and said: ‘Ok, so we’ll do it, I’m glad we talked.’ It was all really spontaneous! It was great to be a part of the spectacle, it wasn’t purely just my performance. It was about the clothes, and the models, and this whole set as well so it was quite nice being a part of something so exquisite and exciting. The clothes were wonderful, they all looked like beautiful, pastel-coloured fish in this underwater landscape with the pearls all over them.
