Scorsese Directs Chanel’s Men’s Fragrance Ad Starring Gaspard Ulliel

Martin Scorses Directs Chanel Men's Fragrance Ad Starting Gaspard Ulliel

A month ago I reported that Martin Scorsese was spotted at Moto in Brooklyn shooting a new Chanel ad campaign. Word has just surfaced that the ad he was filming was for Chanel’s new men’s fragrance. The ad features French actor Gaspard Ulliel.

Andrea D’Avack, president of Chanel Fragrance and Beauté, stated that “The ads have been shot in New York, the city which is so inherently part of Martin Scorsese’s cinematographic vocabulary.” (WWD)

Chanel has a long history of working with acclaimed film directors from Baz Luhrmann (with muse Nicole Kidman) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (with mus Audrey Tautou ), both for Chanel No.5 at different times.

Chanel works with movie directors because they bring depth, emotion and what we call in French ‘a supplement of soul,’ or an added dimension,” said D’Avack, pointing to films such as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” and “Goodfellas” as examples of Scorsese’s vision. “In the case of Martin Scorsese, we knew we would definitely have a man’s world full of complexity that is also adrenaline-driven, and of course, amazing images. (WWD)

This is the first men’s ad of its kind that I will see and I’m looking forward to it!  I love Martin Scorsese and I think he’s a wonderful choice to film a men’s fragrance ad.  He’ll be able to capture the essence of “man” without coming off as to macho – can’t wait to see!

Martin Scorsese Films New Chanel Ad in Brooklyn

Martin Scorcese Films Chanel Ad in Brooklyn at Moto

Martin Scorsese Films Chanel Ad in Brooklyn at Moto

The rumors are apparently true.  The Dossier Journal reported today that they saw some lights, camera, action! at Moto in Brooklyn last night. Chanel has a tradition of pairing directors with their muses for ad campaigns;  Nicole Kidman and Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) worked together for Chanel No. 5, as did Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie) with Audrey Tautou for the latest Chanel No. 5 ads.  I wonder if Martin Scorsese will be teamed up with some muses of the past… will it be Jodi Foster (Taxi Driver) or Sharon Stone (Casino)?  Only time will tell, but I cannot wait to see this ad!

Chanel No.5 Commercial Sneak Peek

Chanel N.o 5 Commercial Sneak Peak

Chanel N.o 5 Commercial Sneak Peak

Eighty-eight years ago, on 05.05.21, Gabrielle Chanel launched her first fragrance – Chanel No.5. Today, Chanel No.5 is still the world’s best selling fragrance and, according to Chanel, “a product in the Chanel No. 5 portfolio is sold every six seconds.” Because of this legacy, Chanel No.5’s advertising is always the pinnacle of ad campaigns.

It’s been several years since Baz Luhrmann and Nicole Kidman teamed up for the Chanel No. 5 mini film. As we’ve previously reported, Audrey Tautou will be the face of the new Chanel No. 5 campaign – and very fittingly, since she is also cast as Gabrielle Chanel herself in Coco Avant Chanel. Directing Ms. Tatuou is long-time collaborator Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who directed her in her breakthrough film, “Amélie.”  Tautou admitted that she has refused offers to represent other fragrances, she stated, “I needed to have a connection with the product.”

The full-length Chanel No. 5 film (2.25 minutes) releases on the internet on 05.05.09, but it was also produced in 60, 45 and 30 second versions for television.   The “megaproduction” took 3 weeks to film last May, with the help of a crew of 250.  The commercial weaves a tale of “missed encounters between strangers” and takes us to locales including Paris, Istanbul, and Nice.  The commercial is set to the tune of Billie Holliday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” and ends with the lovers in a tender embrace standing on a Chanel logo mosaic.  Read the full story to see more gorgeous stills from the commercial and see if you can pick up on all the hidden Chanel themes.  I can’t wait to see this commercial.  If it’s anything like the last 2 Chanel commercials (Kidman’s Chanel No.5 and Knightley’s Coco Mademoiselle), then it’s going to be fabulous!

Audrey Tautou: The New Face of Chanel No. 5

audrey tautou
A few months back we reported that Audrey Tautou would be playing the one and only Mlle. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in the film adaption of the designer’s life. Today, we just learned that Audrey Tautou is said to also be the face of the upcoming campaign and commercials for the legendary Chanel No.5 fragrance.

The actress will work with director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who directed Audrey in cult classic Amélie. She will follow in the footsteps of actress Nicole Kidman who filmed a commercial and ad campaign for Chanel No. 5 and who worked with director Baz Luhrmann who worked with Ms. Kidman in Moulin Rouge. I LOVED what they did together and I’m really excited to see what the next commercial will be like. You can view the Nicole Kidman Chanel No. 5 commercial here – I never tire of watching it!

I’m really happy with the decision to have Audrey Tautou represent Coco in the film and be the face of the designer’s signature fragrance. Especially, since I was really unhappy with Keira Knightley being cast at the face of the Coco Madamoiselle. fragrance. Though stunningly beautiful, I didn’t think Ms. Knightly embodied the class, elegance and style of Mlle. Chanel. I think the company has made up for this by choosing to work with Mlle. Tautou. What do you think?

Coco Mademoiselle – The Film

coco mademoiselle
You may have noticed that the Coco Mademoiselle campaign that once featured a young Kate Moss has been recently revamped with the beautiful Keira Knightley as the new face of the fragrance. Based off of the success of the Nicole Kidman Chanel No. 5 film, Chanel has created another film for the Coco Mademoiselle perfume – all filmed in Coco Chanel’s Paris apartment at 31 Rue Cambon. You can view the film and get an inside look into the infamous apartment here.
