chanel nail video T Magazine Magic Fingers

T, The New York Times Styles Magazine released an exclusive video today showcasing Saskia De Brauw’s manicured hands. Chanel Beauté Creative Director Peter Philips teamed up with London filmmaker Ruth Hogben to create a short Chanel nail polish film.

This film is different from Chanel’s previous nail film Shade Parade; A Polished Look By Chanel shows Saskia De Brauw speaking with her hands literally when she uses sign language to communicate Coco Chanel quotes.  The featured Chanel Le Vernis colors are: Attraction, Tentation, Frisson, and Distraction.  You can view the video on the T Magazine Blog.

Peter Philips Interview from Metro

Metro sat down to chat with Peter Philips about the Chanel Spring-Summer 2012 beauty collection he created. Here are his thoughts as reprinted from Metro:

The inspiration behind his spring 2012 collection: “I chose spring horizons [at] sunset and sunrise, as it can be the most amazing moment of the day. I was afraid it would be a bit kitschy, mellow and corny but it’s also very beautiful. You can do anything you want with the products in the collection, whether you want to look sophisticated and intense or fresh and funky.”

Introducing the latest Le Vernis nail trilogy:
April, May and June:  “The most classical shade and the first to be released is April. Spring is coming, but you’re still in a wintry mood, so you want a darker shade that’s flattering and not too flashy. May is pink-y and girlie, and June has a beach-y feel to it. People will have gotten a bit of sun and color on their skin and can start wearing brighter colors. … The shades are anticipated not because of me, but because they’re Chanel. I have the advantage that I can link my creations with the fashion show — it gives them a reason to exist.”

His love of sparkles: “I don’t have a favorite color, I adore makeup in general. I love a good skin-tone beige and anything sparkly and dramatic.”

Philips’ Top 3 tips:

Invest in an eyelash curler: “All women should have an eyelash curler. This also applies to women who don’t wear makeup. It’s not a dangerous tool, although a lot of people are terrified of it. One pinch to the lashes can work miracles as it opens up your eyes and makes you look fresh and awake. Add some mascara, and you’re ready to go.”

Apply just the right amount:
“It’s a criminal offense to wear too much makeup, just as it is to wear too little. It’s all about striking a balance and wearing a look with confidence. Something that always looks wrong is not blending your foundation in so that you can see the line between the face and the neck. It’s so easy to avoid: Blend it out with your fingers and check the lighting in your bathroom.”

Remember, makeup can’t fix everything: “Every phase of your life has beauty in it. We all want youth, but at some point we have to realize that we’re getting older and it’s not all about foundation or mascara. If you eat and live wrong, it will have an impact on your looks. You know the tricks:?Eat more vegetables, stop smoking, drink water and cut back on alcohol.”

On color
: “It took 24 tries in the lab before we got the right shade for Le Vernis in June. I wanted it to be the color of this plastic bag handle I got from some random shop in the States. The bag was black and the handle was this beautiful orange plastic. It had to be that exact shade, but in lacquer. It had to look just like the plastic, not transparent or pearly.”

Chanel: The Little Black Jacket Photo Shoot with Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld

“The CHANEL jacket symbolises a timelessly fashionable form of nonchalant feminine elegance: it belongs to every era” – Karl Lagerfeld.

Chanel sent a video of a behind-the scenes look at the making of the The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic jacket revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld. Watching this video is like watching the dream team of fashion at work with Peter Philips doing makeup, Carine Roitfeld styling and Karl Lagerfeld photographing. I’ve always wanted a Chanel Little Black Jacket and now I want one even more!

The images for this latest project were shot in Cannes, in the South of France, and then in New York, before finishing up in Paris in Karl Lagerfeld’s studio. Over a hundred models and celebrities have been captured by the designer’s lens. Actors, artists, singers, rock stars – the book’s impressive line-up encompasses all aspects of contemporary culture today including Georgia May Jagger, Carine Roitfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker, Virginie Ledoyen, Akuol de Mabior, Virginie Viard – and they all wear CHANEL’s uniquely timeless and versatile little black jacket in their own special way.

The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, will be available in bookstores beginning Autumn 2012.

Luck Be A Lady: Chanel Introduces Las Vegas de Chanel

Las Vegas de ChanelAnyone who has been to Las Vegas will tell you that town is not low on glitz or luxury. Between the neon lights and desert sand, the town is always painted in gold. The Bellagio Hotel is renovating the Chanel boutique in its Galleria and to commemorate this event, Peter Philips has created “gold-plated collection and strews stardust over polyester dreams.”

Las Vegas de Chanel includes four items: Lucky Stripes, a compact with four shades of sand and bronze to be worn on eyes, face or cheekbones; Rouge Coco Shine in Brilliant, a sheer golden lip shade; Le Crayon Lèvres Vegas Gold, a gold lip pencil; and it wouldn’t be a collection without a covetable Le Vernis in Gold Fingers.

The remodel should be completed by the end of this month.  I’ll actually be staying at The Bellagio mid-February when I go to some trades hows in Las Vegas and I will definitely check out the new space. And I hope to get my fingers on Gold Fingers!

Chanel “Les Harmonies de Printemps” Spring 2012 Makeup Collection Swatches

Chanel Les harmonies de printemps spring 2012 makeup collection

Back in November I posted about the Chanel “Les Harmonies de Printemps” Spring 2012 Makeup Collection.  Last week I received more info from Chanel about the collection as well as the Swatches.

From the break of dawn to the descent of twilight, skies reveal an enchanting array of hues with the arrival of Spring. Inspired by this brilliant seasonal change, Peter Philips, Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, infused glowing, sunlit colour into the Spring 2012 Makeup Collection, HARMONIE DE PRINTEMPS. Subtle gradations of rose, coral and peach sculpt the face, giving it a soft radiance, while rich garnets and vivid pinks dress the lips.
BLUSH HORIZON DE CHANEL GLOWING BLUSH HARMONY
In one elegant compact, five pink and peach tones mimic the luminous hues of sunset. This unique powder blush lends itself to multiple effects: blended together, the harmony is ideal for sculpting and accentuating the natural contours of the face. Using just the pink shades creates a fresh, youthful flush, while on their own, the peach tones produce a warm, sun-bronzed glow. $58.00 Limited Edition

The Chanel “Les Harmonies de Printemps” Spring 2012 Makeup Collection is available for sale online now in the U.S. – get those limited edition nail colours before they sell out!

Chanel Métiers D’Art Paris-Bombay 2012 Beauty

Chanel Metiers DArt Paris Bombay 2012 Beauty Bombay Express

Photo courtesy of Chanel; Photos by Vincent Lappartient.

Peter Philips created another gorgeous makeup collection to compliment Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Métiers D’Art Paris-Bombay 2012 presentation. The ubiquitous kohl-rimmed eyes so popular in the South East was reinterpreted for the runway and were the main focus on the face.  Lips and cheeks were kept minimal and natural and all of the emphasis was on the very dark eyes.

Several limited edition products were created for the “Bombay Express” collection including POUDRE COMPACTE in Route des Indes de CHANEL, ILLUSION D’OMBRE Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Nirvana, JOUES CONTRASTE Powder Blush in Brume d’Or, ROUGE COCO SHINE Hydrating Sheer Lipshine in Empreinte and LE VERNIS Nail Colour in Diwali.  I am most excited about Illusion d’Ombre in Nirvana and Le Vernis in Diwali.  Based on the glimpses we saw on the runway, I’m guessing that Nirvana will be black – though I’m wondering how different it will be to Mirifique.  Diwali or the “festival of lights” is one of the most joyous celebrations in India.  Based on the runway images Le Vernis Diwali looks goldish-luminiscent and based on the name I can imagine the color was inspired by lights.  The Exclusive Creation Collection Chanel ‘Bombay Express’ will be available in select Chanel makeup counters in June 2012.

I Told You So!

A few weeks ago I posted a Dior video that showed a pinball machine game animation and I likened it to Chanel’s “Here Comes the Beauty Pack” video that brought Chanel cosmetics to robotic life. I know it was a bit of a stretch but for me Dior’s video was reminiscent of Chanel’s video – especially when looked at in the context of all the other copying that has been happening.

One of La Chanelphile’s readers, Alexandre Fons, brought this Dior video to my attention.  The video was uploaded about a month ago and depicts a Dior cosmetics animation in the form of Tetris, Pacman and Super Mario Brothers.  Sorry, but there’s no arguing your way around this one Dior – so unoriginal! Thank you Alexandre for bringing this to my attention!

Dior Is Killing Me

I’ve been particularly grumpy this week. Not sure why, just in an irritable mood for no particular reason.  So please take this post with a grain of salt…but have you seen the new Dior video on Nowness?  The focal point is PEARLS.  Yes, pearls, the white round precious objects that are pretty much synonymous with Coco Chanel.  Not only that, but this video also seems like Dior’s answer to Peter Philips’ brilliant Here Comes the Beauty Pack

Back when Christian Dior came out Coco Chanel was irritated by him and now it appears, the legacy continues. Who knows, maybe it’s just me and my grumpy mood…what do you think? See for yourself…
